I Like You, I Like You Not

Okay, so I was talking to my friend the other day. We were discussing this one girl that we both know and don't particularly like. My friend was talking about how annoying she was and how she had done something stupid recently and we were laughing. He then turned to me and asked, "You don't like her, huh?" to which I replied, "No. Why? Do you?" I was incredulous. Shouldn't it be obvious from our former conversation that I was no fan of hers? He then said, "Well, I don't know, it's not that I don't like her, it's just that I wouldn't hang out with her." I gaped, mouth-open, dumbfounded expression slapped onto my face...

How is it that we are so delusional? Is no one honest anymore? What is so wrong about saying that you don't like someone. I mean, it's not like they don't know. It's not like they can't tell. Wouldn't it be nicer just to tell the truth? I've noticed that saying "I don't like you." or "I don't like them." has become extremely taboo. We say all kinds of things instead, and ceaselessly jabber on and on...talking in circles and doing almost anything to avoid simply stating that you don't like them. If you can say, "I wouldn't hang out with them", "She/He is soooo annoying", or "Why won't they just go away?" then what is so very wrong with just saying the truth...even if it's just to yourself.
There's way too much pressure on everyone to "get along" and people will sit there and pretend to like someone, to their own possible detriment (some people really are in danger of driving you crazy.) Sometimes...wait for it...it's really okay to not get along with someone. This is revolutionary stuff, here: We don't all have to be friends. Sometimes you just won't get along with someone...for good reason, and just because you don't like them doesn't mean you have to hate them. There's lots of grey area here to be embraced. You can be aquaintences. You can be collegues. You can just be two people who don't talk to each other. However, if you are tired of struggling to keep your will to live around a certain someone...here are some good ways to let them know that you simply can't stand them:

5.) "I can't stand you. Let's not be friends."

4.) "I don't like you."

3.) "If you are here for one more second, I may cause one of us physical harm."

2.) "I'm too busy to pretend to like you right now...let's not."

1.) "I don't like you."

Okay. So maybe that was kind of mean. But that's just me... I'm sure YOU can come up with a much nicer way to tell that boring, obnoxious, or know-it-all person that you just aren't interested in breathing the same air as them...ever.

The Road Most Taken

Okay, so I'm upset with Robert Frost...and it's because of this poem. The Road Not Taken. Honestly. I'm so over it. How many times do I have to hear people going on and on about how this poem is their favorite poem (when they know very well this is the only poem they've ever even heard), and how this poem reflects their life because of blah and blah and blah. That's about as far into the conversation I get before losing consciousness just to escape it.

Seriously now. If this is everyone's favorite poem, than how can they claim to have taken "The Road Not Traveled"? Wouldn't that mean they've taken the road MOST traveled? I don't know, but I've decided it's a shame because Robert Frost actually has quite a few other poems. And, wonder of wonders, so do other poets! Maybe it's time to check them out, too? For the love of God...check out something by Whitman, Poe, Bronte, or Dickinson, even. Or, if you're feeling really inspired, you could chance the iffy crowd at your local open mic night. So many possibilities, and so little time. However, there'll be even less time if you keep pontificating about your own fork in the road and how it relates back to....oh shit! I'm losing consciousness...

Harry Potter

Okay, so Harry Potter is one of my favorite topics and, since I want this blog to be about topics, especially those I like, I think it's a great place to start. I'm currently in Australia studying and, to have something familiar around me, I brought two of my Harry Potter books. I soon realized that that just wouldn't be good enough, though. After reading the Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, I remembered why I loved the stories so much. So, here's the top five for the day.

Top Five Reasons to Read Harry Potter

5.) The books are addictive, so even if you only read, like, one line of one book, you're hooked and have no choice but to read the entire seven book series. It's irresistable.

4.) Harry Potter has become a ridiculously huge film franchise, too, so you get to see all of your favorite British actors and actresses play some brilliantly imagined characters.

3.) Harry may not be responsible for bringing sexy back, but he DID bring back round glasses, scars, and doing nude plays. lol

2.) When you read the story, you are in a totally different world. I compare it to Twilight by saying that, when you read Twilight, you're like, "I can't believe that happened to Bella/Edward/etc.", but when you read Harry Potter, you're like, "I can't believe that happened to my best friend Ron/Harry/Hermione".

1.) The best reason to read Harry Potter is because it's a generational icon. I mean, seriously, is there anyone living in normal society that hasn't heard of Harry Potter?

So, you can stop trying to fight it. You're going to like it. I promise. :)
